Our
young people grow up in surroundings which protect them. At an
AHOEC Centre they will learn about risk and how to look after
themselves and others in all sorts of ways. They will participate
in exciting, usually challenging activities and learn
from qualified, experienced tutors how risk can be assessed and
reduced.
The challenge level is set so that they will succeed
but only with effort, a different sort of effort than required
in the classroom. Often those who find school learning difficult
will discover new ways of learning. All gain confidence something
which is essential for education to take place effectively.
An
important aspect of our approach to learning is “teamwork”.
The activities require all group members to support each other,
often in the most unexpected ways. A visit to one of our Centres
is often the young persons first stay away from home. We strive
to create a warm welcoming atmosphere where the young people
can feel secure. |
